The Reading Room

Our family loves to read. We know we should read more than we do.Sharing like this might help. It is helpful to share what we read with each other. This is a family blog, but if you have read what we are reading or if you are reading something that would be edifying and constructive for our Christian walk, please feel free to share!

When Jesus Spoke

Below is the text of a new song I wrote on Christ's ministry as Prophet, Priest, and King. It was partly inspired by the message Bob preached at CPBC when we were there in December on the Messiah's threefold ministry. It has gone through several revisions, and I owe a lot of thanks to Pastor Miller and Bob, who both graciously critiqued it and encouraged its completion. You can see a lead sheet score (sorry, haven't written the 4-part harmony yet) here. - Daniel

When Jesus Spoke
(Prophet, Priest, and King)
Words and music by Daniel Bixby

When Jesus spoke, all nature strained to capture every word;
A greater prophet, fuller truth, our world had never heard.
This Prophet, one with God, ordained a plan for history,
And Christ alone has power to unveil its mystery.

Refrain:

Alleluia! Praise Messiah,
Holy Prophet, great High Priest, and King!
Alleluia! Praise Messiah,
Jesus is my Prophet, Priest, and King!

When Jesus hung in silence and God in flesh was dead;
The altar bore a perfect lamb to crush the serpent’s head.
The Priest was offered as the Lamb, a selfless sacrifice,
For Christ alone could offer up himself to pay sin’s price.

When Jesus rose in victory, the sacrifice complete,
The servant, robed in royalty, ruled nations at his feet.
The King of all dominions reigns supremely from his throne –
The power to condemn or to forgive is Christ’s alone.

When Jesus stands at God’s high throne and pleads my destiny,
The Prophet’s word will be fulfilled with all authority.
The Priest will show his blood-stained hands, the scars of perfect love,
The King will claim me as his own, an heir to God above!

You have to download Scorch to your computer. It should have provided a link to do that. Sorry.

I'm not a Bixby, but I did enjoy learning this song at our church recently. It's funny that I checked this blog today, 'cause I was humming the chorus of this song today while getting ready for work. Thank you for sharing it with us!
